Other Causes of Nasal Irritation
Obstructions
If something is blocking the nasal passages, it may lead to a stuffy or runny nose, breathing difficulty, and sometimes a foul odor or bad breath.
The nose can be blocked by a foreign object (this is common among young children), a nasal polyp, or a structural abnormality that may have been present since birth or caused by an injury. A foreign object in the nose must be removed and may require a visit to the doctor to make sure it doesn't get pushed further up the nasal passage.
Medication Side Effects
Some medications contribute to nasal congestion because they either dry out the nose or increase blood flow to the mucous membrane, causing it to swell up. Talk to your doctor if you're experiencing bothersome congestion and are taking any of the following medications:
- Antianxiety medications
- Beta blockers
- Birth control pills
- Erectile dysfunction medications
- Diuretics
- Nasal decongestants (they can increase congestion when used for more than 3 days)
