Treatment: Ablative Treatment
What It Does
Removes top skin layer and stimulates new collagen generation in middle layer. New collagen creates a tightening effect and improves deeper wrinkles.
What It's Best For
Removing surface problems, such as pigment changes, scars, and fine lines.
Average Cost
Average surgeon/physician fees vary somewhat by speciality:
$2,341: American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
$2,236: American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).
$2,160: American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Risks and Recovery Time
Healing time varies, depending on technique and depth of resurfacing, but typically takes about 10 days for crusting to resolve and new upper layer of skin to form.
Redness may take months to entirely disappear. There is some risk of infection, pigment changes, and scarring.
Inside Scoop
Don't underestimate the healing time or the amount of wound care you will have to do during the first week when skin is raw and must be kept moist. Avoid sun exposure entirely or at least be diligent about sun protection; using a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen and a large-brimmed hat is essential for several months following treatment.
