Aging Skin -- Overview
Skin undergoes many changes throughout a lifetime. Everybody starts with youthful skin that has ample amounts of collagen and elastin, which creates a soft, smooth, supple appearance. Young people also have a thick layer of subcutaneous fat, which helps skin look plump. Perhaps most significant of all, the cumulative effects of sun exposure are not yet visible in young skin.
However, the effects of time, the environment, and personal health habits start to become evident in skin as a person ages. The choices people make every day regarding activities and environment can have a significant impact on how their skin ages. Certain choices speed the process, and knowing this information can help people determine the best way to slow the aging process and help their skin maintain a healthy and youthful appearance for longer.
