Side Effects of Nonsteroid Pills and Injections
Side effects associated with immunosuppressants (such as methotrexate, cyclosporine, and hydroxyurea) can include liver or kidney damage, anemia, high blood pressure, dizziness, or an upset stomach. People with weakened immune systems should avoid taking these drugs. Also, cyclosporine should not be taken by people who have been treated for psoriasis with high levels of ultraviolet light (UVB or PUVA).
- Anyone who is or may become pregnant should not take methotrexate, cyclosporine, hydroxyurea, or retinoids.
- Men whose female partners may become pregnant should not take methotrexate.
- Women who are breastfeeding should not take cyclosporine.
Long-term side effects are less well known for biologic agents (infliximab, etanercept) because they are relatively new. But because there is concern that they may damage nerves or increase infections, TNF blockers may not be recommended for people with multiple sclerosis or who carry tuberculosis.
All of these treatments for psoriasis should only be undertaken by a physician who specializes in managing this condition.
