Take the RealAge DVT Health Assessment for personalized risk advice.

The following is a list of guidelines for anticoagulant therapy:

  • Take the medication exactly as directed and know what to do if a dose is missed. Never double up on the next dose.
  • Do not engage in high risk activities that may result in injury and cause severe bleeding, such as horseback riding, skiing, contact sports, etc.
  • Report easy bruising or bleeding to the doctor right away.
  • Do not use a razor for shaving; use a blade-free electric shaver.
  • Wear an ID bracelet to alert medical personnel of anticoagulant therapy in the event of an emergency.
  • Get regular check-ups and blood tests as scheduled.
  • Discuss all medications, herbs, vitamins, or supplements with a healthcare provider. Some may affect the way blood thinners work. Do not take aspirin or fish oil supplements with anticoagulant therapy.
  • Follow the doctor's advice regarding dietary guidelines and anticoagulant therapy.
