Enlarged Prostate

What are the symptoms of BPH?

The symptoms of BPH can be divided into two categories. Some symptoms, often called voiding symptoms, are caused by the obstruction of the urethra. These include:

  • a weak, intermittent urinary stream, and dribbling at the end
  • difficulty starting urination
Other symptoms are caused by changes in the bladder and are sometimes called filling symptoms. These include:
  • needing to go more frequently
  • a strong and sudden desire to urinate that is hard to delay
  • feeling that the bladder has not completely emptied
  • awakening frequently at night to urinate (a condition known as nocturia)
Burning or painful urination or the appearance of blood in the urine are not typical of BPH and should be checked out immediately by your primary healthcare practitioner.
To determine if you have benign prostatic hyperplasia, take the RealAge® BPH Health Assessment.
