Preventing Lower-Back Pain While Driving

To prevent lower-back pain while you drive, adjust the seat so that your thighs are supported and your knees are slightly above hip level. Rest your feet lightly on the pedals and keep your elbows bent comfortably while you grip the wheel. Make sure that the headrest is just behind the back of your head. If your seat does not provide lumbar support for the small of your back, use a pillow or a rolled-up towel.

On longer trips, tighten your leg and buttock muscles every 10 minutes or so, stretching in your seat, and arching your back. Stop every few hours and walk around briefly. The vibrations of a moving car are stressful to your spine, so keep your shock absorbers in good repair. It will be safer for you, for your passengers, and for other drivers if you pull off the road for the day at the first sign of a backache -- and much kinder to your spine.
