Learn More: Abrasions

Home Care for an Abrasion

Skinned knees and elbows are a part of an active lifestyle and can be cared for at home unless the abrasion is very messy.

  • Cleanse the scrape gently and thoroughly with slow-running tap water.
  • Apply a 3%-hydrogen peroxide solution to clean the area if desired.
  • Leave the abrasion uncovered unless exposure will lead to more contamination.
  • Allow scabs to form and do not remove them.
  • Use an icepack for immediate pain relief. (A bag of frozen peas or corn works well for this and can be reused as an ice pack. Be sure to label the package, so you don't eat the vegetables later.)
