Choosing an OTC Pain Reliever -- Cautions for Medical Conditions

If you have certain medical conditions, you should take extra care in choosing your over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever. The following conditions may be negatively affected by or exacerbated by certain types of OTC pain medications.

  • Ulcers or other gastrointestinal conditions
  • Asthma
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy

Speak with your healthcare provider if you have any of these conditions and would like to take an OTC pain reliever. Your healthcare provider may be able to recommend the safest choice, or recommend medications or dosing schedules that will help to minimize risk.
