Finger or Thumb Rehabilitation

Take the RealAge Strains and Sprains Assessment for personalized recommendations to treat your injury.

If the injury is to the middle joint or the joint nearest your hand, "buddy tape" the finger to the neighboring finger while the injury is healing. Flex the fingers as if you were holding a can and tape the two fingers in this position.

If the injury is to the fingertip or to the thumb, have a medical professional perform the splinting.

After the first 3 days of ice application, start applying heat and ice alternately on the injured finger. Place the finger in an ice bath for 10 minutes, then in hot water for 10 minutes, and then repeat the ice application for 10 minutes. Do this two to three times per day. The heat phase is a good time to flex the finger and try the gripping exercise below.

This exercise will help strengthen and stretch the finger to help return it to normal function and avoid further injury.

  • Squeeze a tennis ball gently. Hold for 3 to 8 seconds. Relax. Repeat 10 times. This exercise should be done hourly.
