Learn More: Insect Bites & Stings

Prevention

Insect bites and stings can be avoided by following the instructions below:

  • Wear white or any light-colored clothing to avoid bee stings.
  • Do not wear dark-colored and flowered-printed clothing, because bees are usually attracted to these types of patterns and colors.
  • Avoid wearing perfumes or colognes when spending time outdoors. These sweet smells can attract insects.
  • Wear shoes or sandals when walking through grassy or wooded areas to avoid being stung by insects or spiders.
  • Apply insect repellent containing DEET or other insecticides every few hours when in insect- or spider-infested areas. Carefully follow package instructions for safety.
  • Use a lower-concentration DEET product for small children or pregnant women.
  • Wash off the insecticide product when indoors again.
  • Use Alpha-Keri® and Skin-So-Soft® bath oils to repel insects. However, these products are generally less effective than DEET compounds.
  • Wear gloves and tuck pants into socks when working in woodpiles, sheds, and basements where spiders can be found.
  • Remove the offending insect if it is in or around your home. For example, look for and remove hornet’s nests, vacuum thoroughly around a bed where a spider bite occurred, eliminate or fumigate standing water areas, which encourage mosquitoes to breed, use appropriate solid insecticides on fire ant nests.
  • Check the picnic or camping area before unrolling sleeping bags and setting up tents. Always shake out shoes and other clothing before putting them. Use in infested areas mosquito netting and burn antimosquito coils.
