Learn More: Sore Throat

Rheumatic Fever

Although this is rare today, rheumatic fever can still be a problem in some regions. Antibiotics are effective in preventing rheumatic fever if they are given within 9 days from the onset of the sore throat. If any of the symptoms of strep throat are present (i.e., a sore throat accompanied by a fever over 101°F, a white or yellow coating of the tonsils, and/or swollen glands in the neck), a visit to the doctor is usually in order.
