Online Quiz Helps Consumers Sniff Out and Snuff Household Pollutants

RealAge bolsters allergy and asthma awareness

San Diego, CA, May 20, 2008 -- Allergy and asthma sufferers will be tempted to stay indoors and seek refuge from itchy eyes and runny noses once May’s flowers begin budding and pollinating. Yet, pollutants and allergens can be potent inside the home also, especially if you don’t know where to find them. During National Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, RealAge.com has teamed up with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and is offering a quiz to put your household-pollutants radar to the test.

How can consumers develop a nose for the allergy and asthma triggers that lurk behind their front doors? RealAge.com, the nation’s leading health and wellness Web site, wants allergy sufferers to know it’s not just about the great outdoors; household pollutants can be unhealthy, too. Even at low levels, chemicals and allergens in the home can set off irritating and uncomfortable reactions. Check out the Indoor Pollutants quiz from RealAge:

In addition to the quiz, RealAge arms allergy and asthma sufferers with a to-do list designed to detoxify their homes. Here are just a few of the tactics:
  • Get a set of tightly woven (1 micron pore) sheets and pillowcases to block the microdust that dust mites leave behind.
  • Dust and vacuum frequently -- including your mattress -- to prevent a buildup of dander, pollen, dust, and dust mites.
  • Make sure your bathroom is well ventilated, and open windows to prevent a buildup of mold and mildew.
  • Don’t microwave your food in plastic. Use ceramic or glass containers covered with a paper towel or wax paper.
