Eating Complex

Good carbs versus bad carbs: Do you know the difference?

Carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap, and that's a shame. Eat the right kind of carbs -- the low-glycemic index (GI) kind -- and you'll lose weight and lower both LDL and total cholesterol. Eat the wrong kind and . . . well, your heart suffers the consequences. GI index refers to how quickly starches break down and affect your blood sugar.

I can't believe that a site that professes to be so knowledgeable as this one is still glibly talking about "wheat bread" buns without being specific that it should be whole wheat - not just "enriched" which is just as much junk as white bread.

And take a look at how many calories in a slice of bread after they add the high fructose corn syryp.

This GI table was impossible to discern. We are not doctors. A list of the foods that are GOOD or BAD would have been more helpful without all the letters, numbers, symbols etc.

I agree with MLLC that the table is practically impossible to read. A simple list of foods would have been better. I will try LYNND's suggestion. Thanks!

I decided to cut out anything that contained High Fructose Corn Syrup in the ingredients, which surprisingly is almost everything that is made by food companies. In doing so you pretty much eliminate most processed sugars that accompany HFCS. During my first month I eliminated this plus walking everyday, I lost 21 pounds. I also lower my blood sugar from 280 to 110. I currently am at 102. NO MEDICATION NEEDED. Also start using stevia sweetener instead of sugar or artificial sweeteners. It has a 0 GI and contains inulin fiber.

In response to the point about the Aborigines... the high fat diet that is native to the Aborigines is quite different from the high fat diet we Westerners typically eat. The Aborigines' native diet probably does not contain grain-fed beef and pork, which is completely unnatural. (Grain-feeding the animal upsets the balance of Omega3:Omega6 fatty acids). And don't even get me started on our fake "oils". If Western diets consisted of grass-fed animals, bugs and other "natural" foods, then that'd be fine. But I believe The Drs here are referring to high-fat, grain-fed, unnatural processed things like cheeseburgers and fried potatoes.

How do you reconcile this info with the studies that showed indigenous folks like Australian Aborigines, who HAD diabetes, were CURED of this when they went back on their native diets...with lots of protein, meats, mollusks, bugs, etc. They were on low carb, high fat diets and they improved IN SPITE of idiot nutritional advice much like you are giving here. In fact, nutritionists went nuts when this was proposed, sure that this would lead to their deaths, and yet the opposite occurred: their diabetes reversed, they lost fat and pounds, and they improved in other health parameters, too. It made many upset because it went against the truthiness of today's nutritional advice. There is evidence that grains - even the whole grains that you revere - are inflammatory to some level. Maybe you should promote seeds and leaves more than grains. O, wait, this goes against the food pyramid, doesn't it? Good.

Anti-oxidants and other cancer-fighters are in FRUITS.
The most neglected carbs are fruits ... melons... berries.

The attached table is terrible. Too much work to figure out how to interpret. The rest of the tip is OK, but don't even bother with such an unfriendly table!
