REALAGE TIP

Lobster, T-Bones, and Your Knees

Love Friday night surf and turf at your local pub? Got a bum knee or foot that often flares up on weekends? There may be a link.

Eating foods that are high in a protein called purine -- such as a seafood and steak dinner washed down with a cold beer -- can bring on gout, a particularly painful type of arthritis that primarily attacks leg and foot joints.

I woke up one morning when I was 30 with RA. I have tried almost all meds. The best advice is to rest [even if it is sitting down] when I feel pain, keep moving when possible, eat healthier [we all 'cheat'] and keep as good an attitude as possible - it isn't easy when you hurt but try your best.

I recieved my first attack on both knees in 2003. I found that not eating any meat except for Turkey seemed to resolve the problem for me! Your tips have been very enlighting for me! Thanks!

My 1st gout attack to my knee was in 1996. Doctors put me on 300mg Allopurinol that controlled it under normal conditions except for certain situations which I eventually in 2000 zeroed in on shrimp and beer. My doctors weren't aware of beer as a contributor, and I never read anything that related it to beer. It was very asuring to me to read this info on RealAge.

I have had a bout with gout myself. And,I find that staying away from red meats, and incorporating, black cherry concentrate and water (mixed) into my daily diet keeps the gout away, also eating cherries...They help to break the crystallization down in your joints. Now,I have been gout free for 7 years now....This is what works for me,and I'm sure it would work for you.

I drink decaf tea constantly. It's easy to get better quality tea and not use tea bags. You need a tea kettle, a tea pot, a tea infuser and a good quality bulk tea. In the morning my husband fixes tea which I drink hot, then refrigerate the rest for ice tea through the day. Even buying a premium bulk tea is much cheaper than buying soda pop in cans or bottles or bottled water. Big plus--it tastes better, too.
