Shelf Life: How Long Does Fruit Stay Nutritious?

You've got a ripe banana and a juicy plum. Which one's antioxidants will hold up best after a couple of days in your fruit bowl?

The answer: Eat the banana now. Turns out bananas may lose their antioxidant qualities quickly. Dark plums, on the other hand? They could actually get a tiny antioxidant boost with short storage. Here's how other fruit holds up.

Never get rid of very ripe (browning) bananas. There is always banana bread, fruit smoothies or an extra dose of Potassium sliced in your favorite morning cereal just to name a few. Enjoy!

I read somewhere that if bananas are eaten before they start to ripen they have more of a certain chemical thats suppose to be better for you. I wish I could remember where i read this. Does anyone out there know what I mean? Wow kaff I did not know this about watermelon, thanks

Make fresh fruit desserts & your family won't hesitate to eat it. Roll out & precook a flat piecrust (or use sugar cookie dough). Spread your favorite whipped cream cheese over it. Then just slice & arrange fruit on top of the cream cheese spread. Another dessert, even easier, blend whipped cream cheese & sour cream (we use the fat free versions), add vanilla & a tablespoon of brown sugar. Drop this topping over cleaned, whole strawberries in an oven safe dish. Put a generous amount of brown sugar (no clumps) over the topping, then broil until brown sugar melts & looks bubbly. It only takes a couple minutes. The fruit will still be cool and have this simple but elegant Romanoff topping.

Bananas ripen very quickly during the summer, so before the skins turn & your family just leaves them to spoil, peel them, wrap in plastic & freeze. Green seedless grapes also come across as a treat when frozen, like little popsicles...just rinse & pull them off the vine, drop in a bowl and watch them grab a couple everytime they look in the freezer.

Watermelon is another fruit that increases antioxidant levels with counter time. Don't store a watermelon in the fridge until after it's sliced.

a great breakfast is a bowl of oatmeal or favorite cereal, cut fruit on top, firmer fruit is better than soft for this, and a sprinkle of brown sugar, pour milk or favorite juice over all, and enjoy. To your health !! Also makes a healthy lunch for those that skip breakfast.

Many men don't eat fruit as much --so to entice them a cut fruit bowl does it. If alcohol is not a no-no in your home, an occasional capful of peach schnapps, brandy or cherrry herring or liqueur to the bowl gives an added "punch" (no pun intended)!

As I've read that watermelon and blueberries are also have more antioxidants after you keep them several days old, I always buy new watermelon & blueberries to replace the old ones. while I am enjoying eating those old fruits, the new ones are working on packing more of the good stuff for next time...and it keeps on going...
