REALAGE TIP

Get Sauced to Stay Healthy

As if the taste of your grandmother's spaghetti sauce recipe weren't enough incentive. Studies show that the yummy red stuff is a major cancer deterrent, too.

Your risk of developing certain cancers (like prostate, GI, skin, or breast cancer) decreases significantly when you eat 10 or more tablespoons per week of tomato sauce. S'getti anyone?

My tip is more about what NOT to do with tomatoes. I love them, and I really like the idea that they can help prevent the cancers that have struck several generations of my family.

But I've noticed that if I don't watch myself I have a tendency to add to much salt to tomatoes, whether I'm eating them raw in a salad, or using them in a dish. And I guess your taste buds adapt, and once you go salty, you want to stay there.

Of course it is kind of silly to prevent cancer while doing something that might affect my blood pressure and heart health. So I've learned to police myself, and use very little (and sometime none!) salt now. In the beginning things were tasting kind of bland, but thankfully the taste buds adapt in the other direction too, and now I don't even notice the difference.

Mmm... Spaghetti is awesome... Add lots of garlic for a health benefit (plus it's tasty) and enjoy a nice glass of red wine. Just leave out the cheese and meatballs... (Darn, I love cheese and meatballs.) But like most Americans I need to lose my spare tire, so at least I'm glad to hear I can enjoy spaghetti and still be healthy. Bon appetit...
