Nuts About Your Eyes

Regardless of their shape, size, or type, fatty foods may be bad for your eyes. With this exception: nuts!

Yep, eating nuts at least once a week may help protect your peepers from vision-stealing conditions like macular degeneration.

A great breakfast recipe is to make regular, (not instant), oatmeal, sprinkled with cinnamon, & a little vanilla and some sweetener. (I use 2% milk ... I know, but it tastes so much better to me.) After cooking, top it off with some coarsely chopped walnuts and fresh fruit or berries.

When those low blood sugar blues hit, usually midafternoon, I take a few nuts to give me a protein boost and stave off hunger until dinner. My favorites are almonds or walnuts!

Since cooked oils are questionable, changing into potentially dangerous transfats, it applies also to the oils in nuts. On an irregular basis it is not so bad but as an every day thing it could become harmful for certain people, having a taxing effect on the liver.
Also many people regard peanuts and cashews as nuts when they are really in the legume class.
An enjoyable mix is ground or grated nuts, real ones, mixed and rolled into shapes with minced dates and/or minced dried fruit. Can be rolled in coconut as well if you like that.
Also dates are not a dried fruit. They grow as they are on palms.
In fact if they do dry out, which they shouldn't, they are just awful to eat as is

I make a mixture of almond slices, sunflower seeds and wheat bran, chopped up in my small chopper. I add 2-3 Tbsps. to my morning oatmeal, or to fruit smoothies. It adds fibre, protein and extra goodness to my food. Enjoy! amacd1

I like to eat an apple along with a small handful of raw almonds. It's a good taste combination!

Take a whole wheat tortilla, fill it with fresh spring greens or spinach, and add dried cranberries and lots of almonds or walnuts. Sprinkle on a little raspberry or balsamic vinegar, roll it up, and enjoy.

1-2 tablespoons of slivered almonds on 1 and 1/2 cups of mixed citrus fruit and peaches(no sugar added). Good carbs. Good fat. I buy the almonds bulk at a very good savings per pound.

Try chewing nuts longer. Nuts, like grains, become sweeter and taste alot better - roasted nuts disrupt the natural oils in the nut and they can become rancid

It's difficult to find nuts with low sodium that taste any good. But eating unsalted nuts with celery, raw or shortly steamed cauliflower and broccoli, or fruit (apple slices, citrus, bananas, or pineapple chunks) makes a delightful combo.

I'm looking for a natural remedy for extremely dry eyes. Even when I'm sleeping, sometimes it seems I can't get enough moisture to blink and it's hard to open my eyes.

I drive for a living and always have nuts on hand for snacks. Black walnuts and almonds are supposed to be healthiest, but I'd rather eat other nuts. So I make up a baggie of mixed nuts from our local nuthouse. I've found it curbs my cravings for sweets!
