My husband had HBP, high colesterol, overweight, etc. 10 years ago. We started, in earnest, the diet suggested by Dr. Dean Ornish (see his book, which New Age tracks beautifully). After beginning this new way of eating (practically vegetarian + the 'heart healthy' (Mediterranean) diet aspects, he is at proper weight and measurements, normal BP, low-normal cholesterol in almost perfect numbers/ratios, etc. --It works!

Whenever I crave that old fashion greasy burger joint I satisfy the craving by drizzling olive oil over thinnly sliced yams.

My Italian father-in-law is 80 and he still mixes concrete, shovels snow, etc. I started eating like him - the Mediterranean way - and I lost 70 pounds. I excercise daily and I eat as much as I want. As long as you eat the right foods you do not have to deny yourself. In a nutshell the Mediterranean diet is: more veggies, less meat. Eat lot's of beans. You can eat pasta and bread. Just exercise regularly and it becomes good fuel for muscles. Cook with herbs and spices. After dinner have some nuts and fruit. After that you will not crave dessert so just a small piece of cake - if any - will be enough.

I use olive oil or olive oil spray whenever I need to add good fat to whatever I am making, even scrambled eggs, or fruit cobblers.
