REALAGE TIP

Grab a Bunch for Your Kidneys

Eating four of these a week can cut your kidney-cancer risk in half. Hint: You need to peel it.

Yep, we're talking bananas. They're bursting with phenolic compounds that appear to thwart renal-cancer cells. And that’s not all the monkey’s favorite fruit brings to your body.

To be honest, the smell of overripe bananas bothers my husband. Immensely. So rather than dealing with his whining (love him to death!) after 45 years I've mastered the art of buying just enough for consumption and never having any that get overripe...

Recently I have been using my overripe bananas to make smooties in the morning. A banana, chocolate syrup (or ovaltine) and milk. I may throw in some blue berries, yum!

I am not sure about this one. I was always told Bananas were hard on Kidneys and very high in sugar. This is one of the fruits that I have learned to Stay away from. I would like to know the truth on this one.

To: HD6977, I am not a doctor but I have a history of cyst on my kidneys I inherited them from my Mother. potassium is not a good thing to eat when you have cysts on your Kidneys Has your Dr. run any test to see if you have polysystic Kidney disease? Also
with polysistic disease your BP starts to increase when Kidney start getting more cysts, I encourage to ask you Dr. about Polysystic Kidney Test ie a 24 hours createne Clearance test and scan you kidneys to see if they show up. I don't usually write to reply to any tips. But yours caught my eye and it sounded very much like the disease that I had and had to have a Kidney Transplant, Please have them check by your DR or a nephrologist(sp) Good Luck. Hope I am wrong. memorymimi@aol.com

I read that if you seperate the bananas when you bring them home, they do not turn black so fast. It's true, I've tried it. So now I can buy bigger bunches and not run out of them so quick.

I have to agree with wickedsox. I worked dialysis for 10 years and teaching patients regarding their diets was a daily task. The title alone can be misleading and I see no warnings for dialysis patients. Your articles are very informative but please include those types of warnings. The high potassium content in a banana can be deadly.

I have kidney problems, stones, along with having had bladder cancer and cysts on both kidneys. I have to take 80 MEQ of potassium a day along with eating 2-3 bananas and my levels are still at the very bottom of normal. I will agree that if you are going to try a holistic treatment discuss it with your DR. I know mine is very receptive and along with my prescriptions the herbs and supplements are finally controlling my BP so I'm happy. Also my DR told me to eat 2 bananas a day one time when I was having some stomach problems and it did wonders and she told me that they will help keep you regular.

This advice can be outright dangerous. Someone with kidney problems should NOT be eating bananas. Most people with kidney problems have elevated potassium levels and if it gets too high it can cause sudden death! Anyone that has been told they have kidney problems please consult with your doctor before taking this advice!

I peel over ripe bananas, wrap them in saran wrap and freeze them. When I have enough, I take them out and make banana nut bread! :-)

I like bananas! They are one of the most practical and delicious fruits --and always available in California. I use my overripe bananas to make banana pancakes and smoothies.
