Sores in the Mouth, Throat, or Esophagus
Sores in the mouth, throat, or esophagus are caused by an inflammation known as mucositis. This occurs in approximately 40% of people on chemotherapy treatments. People receiving radiation treatments to the head or neck area should see their dentist before beginning treatments for help and advice.
Doctors can combat these sores by:
- Prescribing the mouth rinse Mucaine® to help ease inflammation and discomfort
- Suggesting you rinse with Peridex® mouthwash, which may aid in preventing sores. Over-the-counter mouthwashes contain alcohol, which may increase inflammation
- Prescribing sucralfate, which can be used to protect your sores from inflammation
You can follow these dental/tooth care guidelines at home:
- Gargling with soluble aspirin or rinsing with saltwater or baking soda
- Gently brushing teeth with toothpaste that contains fluoride
- Gentle flossing
- Avoiding acidic, spicy, or salty foods
