Nausea and/or Vomiting

Nausea and/or vomiting are common side effects of many cancer treatments. This may occur before, immediately after, or within the first day or two of treatments. Whenever possible, it is best to prevent nausea and vomiting from happening. Your doctor may combat this by prescribing:

  • Anti-emetic medicines, such as metroclopramide (Maxalon™), ondansetron (Zofran®), or granisetron (Kytril®), for people who are at high risk for nausea and vomiting
  • Steroid medications for people who are at an average risk for nausea and vomiting

At home, you can try some behavioral modification methods such as:

  • Avoid eating in rooms that are too warm or that have no fresh air flow
  • Rest after meals but remain sitting up for about an hour after eating
  • Learn more about combating nausea and vomiting by visiting the Treatment Strategy page. Methods such as distraction and relaxation may help with the feelings of nausea
