Pain

Cancer treatments, including chemotherapy drugs, can cause painful side effects. Mouth sores, headaches, muscle and stomach pains, and nerve damage leading to burning, numbness, or shooting pains are some of the side effects you may experience.

Doctors have many methods to combat pain. He or she may:

  • Prescribe medicines that will help with certain pains
  • Recommend over-the-counter medicines, some of which can help relieve mouth sores, headaches, and general pain without affecting your treatment medicines
  • Advise you to see a pain specialist such as an oncologist or neurologist

You can help ease some of the pain by following these tips:

  • Take your prescriptions on a regular schedule.
  • Never skip doses even if you don't feel any pain. If you wait for the pain before you take your medicine, it is harder to control.
  • Learn more about Pain Management by visiting the Treatment Strategy page.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any additional medicines.
