Weight Loss
Weight loss is sometimes associated with chemotherapy and radiation treatments. This may cause tiredness or weakness in some patients. To help keep weight loss to a minimum, doctors may recommend:
- Medications such as metoclopramide (Maxalon) that will prevent the full feeling you may have even when you haven't eaten; this will increase your food intake to help combat weight loss
- Lipase, an enzyme that will help your body absorb fat
- Megestrol acetate (Megase) is a progesterone hormone that will help improve your appetite
At home, you can combat weight loss by:
- Trying to increase your food intake by 450-500 calories per day
- Eating many light meals throughout the day instead of three heavy large meals
- Having snacks around you at home and at work and always eating when the desire hits you
- Avoiding protein-rich or nutritionally important foods right before treatment to prevent developing food aversions
