Acupuncture and Acupressure
Acupuncture is used in conjunction with other cancer therapies to:
- Control pain and post-operative swelling
- Minimize the need for pain medications
- Help speed recovery time
- Relieve nausea
- Reduce breathlessness
How it's used: An acupuncturist taps thin needles into the skin at specific points on the body to stimulate the healing process. Most people find this procedure to be relatively painless.
Acupressure also may be combined with conventional cancer therapies to control symptoms such as pain or nausea.
How it's used: An acupressurist applies finger pressure to specific points on the body.
Caution: Neither treatment should be used alone to fight cancer. Talk to your doctor about whether these treatments are right for you and try to get a referral from a licensed physician. The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture offers a search function.
