Learn More: Living with Cancer

Spiritual or Emotional Support

Spiritual or emotional support from doctors, nurses, family, friends, or a member of the clergy can help with feelings of hopelessness, embarrassment, isolation, and worry. Religious and family involvement can help provide you with:

  • Improved feelings of well-being
  • Decreased anxiety and fear levels
  • Decreased risk of substance abuse
  • A greater sense of purpose and meaning

How it's used: Some studies have indicated that people with cancer have less anxiety and depression when they feel spiritually and/or socially connected. Religious involvement through personal faith or attendance at religious services may help you feel more connected and at peace. Joining a support group for people with cancer also may be a good option.
