Learn More: Deep Vein Thrombosis
Causes - Post-Phlebitic Syndrome
Post-phlebitic syndrome results when long-term DVT damages the valves in the veins and impairs circulation.
The defining feature of post-phlebitic syndrome is venous insufficiency, where veins that have been stretched and damaged cannot function properly and have trouble returning blood to the heart. As a result, blood pools in the legs, causing swelling. Varicose veins and skin ulcers in the ankle area may be present with this condition as well.
