Risks - Trauma and DVT

When the body experiences major tissue damage, this can increase the risk of DVT because trauma to tissues triggers the blood clotting mechanism. Also, some injuries may lead to impaired movement, decreasing circulation throughout the body and increasing the likelihood that blood may clot.

Example of Accidents and Injuries That Increase Risk

  • serious falls
  • broken bones, especially in the pelvic area or legs
  • broken bones with a limb in a plaster cast
  • spinal cord injury
  • paralysis
  • severe burns
  • placement of a central venous catheter, especially when placed in the arm
  • repetitive motion injury from swimming, weight lifting, etc., increases the risk of blood clots in the arm

Example of Surgical Procedures That Increase Risk

  • hip replacement
  • knee surgery
  • pelvic surgery (gynecological procedures, hernia repair, etc.)
  • recent surgery (within the last month)
  • any surgery longer than 4 hours
  • cesarean section (any form of childbirth increases risk, but particularly cesarean section)
  • implantation of a pacemaker
