Learn More: Deep Vein Thrombosis

Treatment - Purpose of DVT Treatment

When blood pools and clots within the veins, it can become a medical emergency if the clot breaks away and blocks circulation in another part of the body. With time, however, the body will naturally dissolve most blood clots that form within veins. Thus, the goal of DVT treatment is to contain the crisis while your body works to dissolve the clot. The immediate focus of treatment is stopping more blood clots from forming and causing complications, as well as preventing existing blood clots from getting any bigger.

Blood clots are typically treated with compression stockings and anticoagulants.
