When and How Should I Begin My Exercise Program?
Your doctor will let you know when you should start exercising, whether it's before, during, or after your treatment. You may even be able to start a simple program soon after surgery. Exercise can reduce fatigue, boost self-esteem, improve your overall mood, and possibly speed up your recovery.
If possible, your exercise program should include: strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness. Begin with low- to moderate-intensity exercise. Begin slowly and progressively increase in time and intensity as you feel up to it. Your muscles will tell you when you have pushed too hard and you need to slow down and rest. Resting is just as important as exercising, so don't give yourself a hard time if you can't do very much at first.
