Visual Impairment Screening Tests
The Snellen visual acuity chart test commonly is used to check clarity of vision and to search for possible unrecognized eye problems. Sometimes screening consists of questions (written or oral), but, particularly for the elderly, use of the Snellen chart is a more accurate way of obtaining information.
Sometimes the examiner also will use an ophthalmoscope as part of the screening process. This instrument allows the viewer to shine a light through the pupil and lens in order to see the inside of the eye. Using an ophthalmoscope, even relatively inexperienced health professionals can detect cataracts and signs of macular degeneration. Even so, there is little information about how accurate these practices are when performed by primary-care physicians (by your family doctor, for instance) rather than by eye-care specialists.
