Complications of GERD

When you have GERD, your esophagus, mouth, and teeth are frequently exposed to stomach acid, and this can lead to some serious health complications, including the following:

  • Gum inflammation
  • Tooth erosion
  • Esophageal erosion
  • Esophagitis
  • Esophageal stricture (tightening and narrowing of part of the esophagus)
  • Barrett's esophagus (a condition that causes precancerous changes in the lining of the esophagus)
