Analgesics

Analgesics, such as aspirin and acetaminophen, are drugs that work by blocking pain messages to the brain, thereby decreasing the sensation of the aching head.

  • These drugs are considered first-line treatment for mild to moderate pain associated with headaches and are also used as preventive therapy for migraine pain.
  • Sometimes analgesic drug combinations are most effective for alleviating pain, for example, combinations of isometheptene and dichloralphenazone.
  • In cases where nausea and/or vomiting accompanies headaches, the prescription drug metoclopramide may be taken in conjunction with analgesics to reduce those symptoms.
  • The most common side effect associated with analgesics is stomach irritation.
  • Individuals who are suffering from stomach ulcers should not take analgesics.
