Anticonvulsants
Anticonvulsants, such as valproic acid and divalproex, were traditionally used to treat epilepsy and psychiatric conditions but are now also prescribed for migraine sufferers.
- Anticonvulsants, proved to reduce both the severity and duration of migraine attacks, are prescribed for patients experiencing seizure disorders, anxiety, or mania that coexist with migraines.
- Possible side effects include hair loss, weight gain, and liver dysfunction.
- Patients who have liver disease or are pregnant should not take anticonvulsants.
