Beta Blockers
Beta blockers, such as propanolol and timolol are used in preventive treatment of migraines, especially stress-related migraines.
- These drugs work by reducing blood pressure and through other central nervous system and vascular effects that are not yet understood.
- Potential side effects of these drugs include fatigue, depression, slow heart rhythms (bradycardia), low blood pressure (hypotension), and breathing problems. Beta blockers should never be discontinued abruptly.
- Beta blockers should not be used during pregnancy or by patients who suffer from asthma, insulin-dependent diabetes, and heart failure.
