Ergotamine Compounds
Take the RealAge Headache Assessment for personalized recommendations to treat your symptoms.
Ergotamine compounds are used to treat moderate migraine pain after analgesics and nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have proved ineffective.
- The absorption of these drugs is increased by caffeine.
- Nasal inhalation of dihydroergotamine is fairly well tolerated and poses less risk of headache recurrence than sumatriptan.
- These drugs are habit forming, and their side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle cramps, chest pain, and tingling sensations.
- Ergotamine compounds should not be used during pregnancy or by patients who have high blood pressure; elevated risk for heart attack as determined by such risk factors as family history of heart disease, elevated cholesterol, obesity, and cigarette smoking; and other circulatory problems.
