Serotonin Antagonists
Serotonin antagonists, such as methysergide, are medications that inhibit the inflammation of blood vessels associated with migraine headaches. Among the oldest and most effective preventive treatments for headaches, these drugs are used only as a last-resort treatment for moderate to severe migraine headaches.
- One side effect of serotonin antagonists is scarring of lung tissue (fibrosis), a potentially serious condition: This drug must not be taken for 1 month after every 6 months of use.
- Patients should not take serotonin antagonists during pregnancy or if they suffer from coronary artery disease, stomach inflammation (gastritis), high blood pressure (hypertension), and connective tissue disease.
