Severe Migraine Headaches

Triptans or ergotamines (specifically dihydroergotamine) are considered to be appropriate first-line treatments for severe migraine pain.

  • Triptans are given orally, in nasal form, or by injection.
  • Dihydroergotamine may be administered in inhalant, injectable, or intravenous (IV) form.

If triptans or ergotamines fail to provide relief, physicians may prescribe other medications, including chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine, ketorolac, dexamethasone, or, as a last resort, meperidine.
