Treatment of Episodic Tension-Type Headaches

What type of headache do you have? Take the RealAge Headache Assessment.
  • Episodic tension-type headaches (ETTH) are usually treated effectively on a self-care basis with nonprescription analgesic medications. These medications include aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen.
  • Some analgesic medications add caffeine to acetaminophen or include the combination of aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine. Caffeine appears to enhance the effect of the analgesic.
  • For episodic tension-type headaches, preventive use of medications is not usually necessary; analgesic medications are taken at the time of the headache. In contrast, for chronic tension-type headaches (CTTH), preventive therapy is the mainstay treatment.
