Sleep Disorder Basics – Who Experiences Sleep Disorders?

Most people sleep like babies well into their teenage years. Then, around age 18, intermittent sleep problems pop up. After age 30, chronic sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome, snoring, and pauses in breathing (sleep apnea), tend to appear.

Although men generally sleep a little less than women each night, women are more likely to have bouts of insomnia. Hormone changes related to menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause are often the cause. Women are also slightly more likely to have restless legs syndrome. Yet men aren't exempt from a sleep shortage: They're more likely than women to snore and have sleep-related breathing disorders, such as sleep apnea.
