Cancer-Fighting Combo

Want to make pizza night a little healthier for your family? Toss some chopped broccoli and sliced 'shrooms on it and you may turn it into a cancer-fighting pie.

Studies suggest that certain nutrients may have even more powerful cancer-prevention properties when they are combined. Sulforaphane and selenium are two such nutrients. Sulforaphane is found in high concentrations in broccoli, watercress, and cauliflower, and selenium can be found in mushrooms, nuts, and sunflower seeds.

You can make your homemade pizzas even healthier by using reduced-fat cheese and by piling on lots of vegetables, such as shredded zucchini, sliced peppers, and diced onions. If you order a pizza, consider asking the pizza place to use half the amount of cheese they normally use. Often, half the amount is enough to provide plenty of cheese flavor for kids while greatly reducing the saturated fat and calorie content of your pizza. Pizzas loaded down with extra cheese can be even more fattening than meat-topped pizzas. If your family likes meat on their pizza, chicken or ham toppings tend to be healthier choices than pepperoni or sausage.

RealAge Projection: Getting kids in the habit of eating plenty of vegetables will benefit them for years to come . . . but only if they keep it up throughout childhood and into adulthood. If they do, their RealAge will be 36 when they're really 40.
