Week 2: Detox Your Cabinets
This week, do these things to grow younger:
1. Trash the Nasty Food
Toss everything in your kitchen that lists any of these in the first five ingredients on the label:
- Saturated fats (palm or coconut oil or any fat that comes from four-legged animals)
- Hydrogenated fat (its a trans fat, and thats bad)
- Corn oil and soybean oil (theyre omega-6 fats; most people get too many of them and too few omega-3s)
- Simple sugars (those ending in -ose, like sucrose, glucose, maltose, and fructose) or sugar alcohols (those ending in -ol, such as sorbitol)
- Syrups (which are simple sugars)
- Bleached or enriched flour (instead, look for 100% whole grain)
- Anything with 4 or more grams of sugar per serving
What can you make with whats left? Hundreds of delicious, easy meals. Pick a few healthy, easy-to-make, go-to recipes now.
2. Keep Walking at Least 30 Minutes Every Day
Logging your walks every day with this tracker can make the difference between walks you mean to do and walks you actually do.
Bonus Moves for Overachievers
- Monday: Go shopping! Invest in a treat thats part reward, part motivator. How about an iPod? Research shows that listening to tunes while you walk makes you go farther and makes a workout feel less difficult. Not into it? Discover why a fleecy pullover might be a better investment than a treadmill. Or find out how to choose the best pair of walking shoes (look at this before you go).
- Wednesday: Better your breakfast. If youre not yet a fan of high-fiber cereals (3 to 5 grams of fiber per serving), heres how to quickly develop a healthy addiction: Start with half a bowl of your favorite cereal, and blend a high-fiber cereal into it. Gradually increase the amount of high-fiber stuff until youre eating it almost exclusively. Get more breakfast ideas: RealAge rates the best.
- Friday: Check your balance. Draw a little box with a bloblike amoeba shape that fills up 70% of the box but also goes outside the box. The box is your job, and the amoeba is you. The empty spots in the box are where most people focus all of their effort, but for healthy balance, try focusing on the part of the amoeba that lies outside of the box.
