Forge Family Ties
Adult ADHD can make family life rocky, especially when there's also an ADHD child in the home (a relatively common occurrence in families with an ADHD parent). Excess energy, unstable emotions, and stress can lead to communication breakdowns, misunderstandings, frustration, and resentment among all members of the family.
Distractibility, procrastination, and disorganization can also make it hard for an ADHD parent to stay on top of the day-to-day activities of family life, whether it's remembering to pick up the kids from school, getting the bills paid on time, or completing important household projects. Parents with ADHD may also have a tough time controlling their emotions when it's time to discipline the kids.
But family upheaval isn't inevitable. Smart coping strategies can minimize the chaos and forge stronger bonds within the family.
