What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate caused by an increase in cells. Also known as benign prostatic hypertrophy, the disease causes problems by obstructing the flow of urine through the urethra.
