Behavioral Change

There are some behaviors that men can develop in their daily lives that may help alleviate urinary problems. Making a few changes in your diet may help with prostate problems, for example. Other behavioral changes include:

  • getting regular exercise
  • having regular ejaculations
  • not drinking fluids in the evening
  • cutting down on caffeine consumption
  • cutting down on alcohol consumption
  • avoiding over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants
  • not delaying urination or bowel movements
  • reducing the stress in life

Studies that investigate the effect of behaviors on BPH symptoms simply have not been done. But you have nothing to lose by adopting these habits. Changing some key behaviors offers no risks or side effects for concern.

If you are not going to seek active treatment for BPH at this time, adopting these behavioral habits gives the best chance of minimizing symptoms. (You may have to wait to see an improvement, if any, in your condition. Generally, a few months are needed to determine if there is an effect.)
