Benefits of Combination Drug Treatments

Reasonably, there could be an additive effect of combining finasteride (Proscar®), the only enzyme inhibitor available, with an alpha-blocker drug because the medications have different actions and affect different components of the BPH problem. If a man is affected by both obstruction from prostate growth and smooth muscles constriction, then taking both types of drugs should be helpful. Unfortunately, there has been little investigation of this approach to medical therapy. Only a few short-term studies have been performed, and studies of combination therapy have not gone on long enough to determine if there are benefits to combination drug therapy.

Adding Finasteride to alpha-blocker drug therapy will increase the likelihood that a patient will experience some problems with sexual function -- one of the main side effects of enzyme-inhibitor, drug therapies -- and will increase the cost of treatment considerably.
