According to 1998 survey data, men in the U.S. who had BPH-related symptoms were treated in the following manner:
| Percentage of Men Treated With | ||||
| Watchful Waiting | Alpha-Blocker Drugs | Finasteride (Proscar®) | Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) | |
| Men with mild symptoms | 77% | 21% | 1% | not applicable |
| Men with moderate symptoms and an enlarged prostate | 10% | 69% | 10% | 10% |
| Men with moderate symptoms and a normal-sized prostate | 10%* | 88% | 1% | 1% |
* These men may have used herbs or other self-care approaches.
Among men with severe symptoms and large prostates, alpha-blockers were the primary therapy used, at least initially (58%). But nearly one-third (31%) eventually underwent TURP. Among severely symptomatic men with smaller prostates, 45% were put on alpha-blockers, 38% underwent TURP, and the rest received no medical therapy but may have used herbal treatments.
