Risk of Diagnosis Is Increasing

The actual chance of getting prostate cancer does not appear to be any greater today than it was 25 years ago. But the risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer between the ages of 50 and 80 has increased nearly threefold. But the evidence suggests that this is not because prostate cancer is occurring more often in men who would not have had it 25 years ago. Rather it is due to two factors: (1) men are living longer and prostate cancer increases with age and is also more likely to become clinically significant the older men live and (2) detection methods (meaning PSA testing) are more sensitive.
