Risks with Needle Biopsies
Needle biopsy is recommended for about 20 of 100 men screened with DRE and PSA. About 14 of these will be negative and, hence, potentially unnecessary.
This type of biopsy is quite safe, but it is somewhat uncomfortable. It can result in a local infection in 3 to 50 out of every 1,000 biopsies. And rarely there may be a systemic infection (about 6 in every 1,000 biopsies) or significant bleeding (about 1 of every 1,000 biopsies).
