Learn More: Prostate Cancer

Quality of Life

The treatment of prostate cancer is associated with a high likelihood of causing some significant adverse effects. It is important to understand the potential side effects of treatment before you submit to screening. The two primary adverse effects -- sexual impotence and loss of urinary control -- are closely related to a man's quality of life. The prostate is so closely intertwined with the urinary and reproductive structures, that it is almost impossible not to do some damage to nerves or blood vessels involved with sexual or urinary function during surgery to remove the prostate. Do you think that being somewhat impotent or incontinent would make you feel any less of a man? Or would you be willing to accept this as part of the price for possibly living longer?
